Diary from the Trenches: An All Stars Story

Day 1

The morning of the first day of our teen intensive was certainly a flurry of creative frenzy!

We warmed them up with theater games and set up different exploratory stations so students could get familiar with different elements that they could incorporate into their staging of folk tales. One student said of this hands-on experimenting, “This is really fun! It’s a mess, but it’s fun.”

The playtime continued even during breaks, with spontaneous jam sessions and toying with favorite props over lunch.

Day 2

The exploration and creative play continued today as we developed cool concepts for each of our folk tale retellings and incorporated each performer’s talents.

We had local musician Libby Belitsos come in to advise our cast on some of their choral work, we had fun practicing tableaus (though it was VERY difficult to stay still and giggle-free) to inform a concept for one of our folk tales, made lots of music and dropped some sick beats, and fulfilled cast member Jillian Sherwin’s burning desire to play with shadows.

Day 3

As you can see, we’ve been cooking up some fun ways to tell a story. Each participant brings their own perspective, ideas, and talents.

Expect lots of original music, a mixture of old stories and hyper-modern retellings, tales both whimsical and profound, the transformative power of ever-versatile fabric, and the fun, vibrant creative energy of smart, silly, talented teens. You’ll be amazed at what they’ve created.
